About the position

The Patient Access Clerk plays a crucial role in the hospital's admission and registration process, ensuring that patients are welcomed and processed efficiently and courteously. This position involves gathering accurate patient data, managing admissions for various patient types, and ensuring compliance with medical necessity and insurance requirements. The clerk serves as the first point of contact for patients and their families, representing the hospital's mission and values while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Responsibilities

  • Interview patients courteously to obtain accurate data for admission and registration.
  • Receive admission information from physicians, the Emergency Room, and patients boarded for surgery.
  • Maintain an updated daily census and available room accommodations.
  • Monitor pre-admission requirements and notify insurance companies for pre-certification.
  • Use the Meditech computer system to register all patients.
  • Direct outpatients to the proper ancillary department.
  • Receive discharges, transfers, and other changes from Patient Care Staff via the hospital computer system.
  • Complete work within authorized time to assure compliance with departmental standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hospital mission, vision, and values, and adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Crosstrain within the department to handle various functions effectively.
  • Determine medical necessity on all physician orders and notify physicians of missing elements.
  • Notify patients of any financial responsibilities related to Medicare guidelines and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Explain the Advanced Directive process to patients and ensure documentation is placed in their charts.
  • Represent Memorial Healthcare as the welcoming official to all patients and visitors.

Requirements

  • High School diploma required.
  • Post high school courses in Medical Terminology required or must complete within one year of hire date.
  • PC or word processing experience required.
  • Medical office or patient access experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of health insurance plans preferred.
  • Proficient in Customer Service.

Nice-to-haves

  • Post high school courses in coding, health insurance, or office procedures preferred.
  • Switchboard or coding experience preferred.
