About the position

The Patient Access Representative at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to patients and their families, ensuring a courteous and efficient experience. This role involves managing reception duties, scheduling appointments, registering patients, and handling various business functions within the department. The representative plays a crucial role in maintaining accurate patient information, validating insurance eligibility, and assisting with financial counseling as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quality customer service to patients, families, and medical staff.
  • Establish and maintain an environmental control plan for the department.
  • Coordinate materials management and monitor clinic activities.
  • Supervise clerical activities within the department.
  • Handle reception duties, including scheduling and registering patients for appointments and procedures.
  • Secure and validate patient information, ensuring accuracy in registration data.
  • Validate insurance eligibility and enter information into appropriate systems.
  • Collect co-pays and assist with financial counseling and clearance as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience with computers and Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Experience with medical insurance, HMO, managed care, and appointment scheduling preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and previous work experience in a healthcare setting preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GE/IDX and Cerner order entry systems.
  • Previous work experience in a healthcare setting.
