About the position

The Patient Access Specialist at Corewell Health is responsible for accurately registering patients and managing their information in a timely manner. This role involves scheduling appointments, obtaining insurance and medical data, and ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations. The specialist will work across various departments, including emergency and outpatient services, and will play a crucial role in enhancing patient experience through effective communication and service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Register patients accurately and timely by obtaining identifying and biographical data.
  • Schedule appointments as needed and perform patient registration activities including pre-registration.
  • Obtain insurance information, medical and demographic data, and enter appropriate diagnostic ICD-9 and/or ICD-10 CPT coding.
  • Answer phones and direct calls courteously and efficiently.
  • Prepare patient liability estimations for scheduled services and walk-ins.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to provide service to patients and colleagues.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as Microsoft systems, calculators, photocopiers, and fax machines.
  • Work with the Pre-service Center and/or physician's office to obtain or change authorizations as required.
  • Transport and escort patients via wheelchair as needed.
  • Inform patients of delays in appointment times when requested.
  • Call physicians or labs when patients arrive without necessary scripts or labs.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and complete all safety-related competencies in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 and ICD-10 CPT coding and medical terminology.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Experience with information systems and proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software.
