About the position

The Patient Account Specialist at PeaceHealth is responsible for managing patient accounts in a call center environment, addressing payment options, insurance setups, and related paperwork for hospital and clinic services. The role involves establishing payment arrangements, resolving patient concerns, and ensuring timely follow-up to maintain acceptable cash flow and accounts receivable metrics.

Responsibilities

  • Screen patients and process Financial Assistance Applications by verifying eligibility per PeaceHealth policy.
  • Communicate with patients via phone, email, MyPeaceHealth, and letters to respond to inquiries or obtain required documents for the Financial Assistance Program.
  • Assist patients with the application process for outreach programs and maintain certifications as required by state or contractual obligations.
  • Work directly with responsible parties to resolve outstanding patient accounts, including setting up and monitoring payment plans.
  • Obtain information to secure appropriate payment of accounts by collaborating with insurance companies, government agencies, and other relevant parties.
  • Communicate necessary requirements to support third-party and government billing, including workers compensation.
  • Perform data entry, maintain customer databases, and document all calls related to patient accounts.
  • Complete necessary research and account assignments for accounts assigned to collection agencies or court documents for bankruptcies and probate cases.
  • Perform skip tracing on patients with return mail and insurance verification as needed.
  • Rebill, transfer payments, process refund requests, or adjust misapplied payments as necessary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in collections, customer service, billing, or related medical field preferred.
  • Familiarity with government, commercial, and third-party billing preferred.
  • Proficient use of computers including MS Office applications is required.
  • Proficiency with 10-key calculators and alphanumeric data entry skills is required.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • Ability to work independently and interdependently with limited supervision is required.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills are required.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.

Nice-to-haves

  • College coursework in Accounting, Business, Medical Technology, Communications, or Social Work is preferred.
