About the position

The Patient Accounts Specialist at Austin Regional Clinic is responsible for assisting incoming callers and patients with billing inquiries, ensuring accurate collection of insurance and demographic information to set up patient accounts. This role emphasizes excellent customer service while adhering to compliance and confidentiality standards, promoting the organization's mission and philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Receives inbound telephone calls from patients and insurance representatives.
  • Asks verification questions before releasing confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Explains explanation of benefits documents to patients/customers.
  • Provides financial counseling and payment arrangements to walk-in patients with outstanding balances.
  • Maintains and follows up on work queue accounts, documenting all actions clearly and accurately.
  • Processes patient refund requests and forwards them to the Refunds processing team.
  • Requests information on patient charges from clinics and follows up in a timely manner.
  • Returns calls to patients regarding the status of their inquiries within established timeframes.
  • Answers patient registration phone calls and obtains necessary insurance and demographic information.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and sets up new members for all insurance contracts.
  • Updates insurance and demographic information for existing patients as needed.
  • Runs registration reports and follows up on incomplete or missing account information.
  • Researches member account transactions for eligibility inconsistencies.
  • Maintains complete and accessible files and resource materials.
  • Assists coworkers as requested and documents productivity statistics reports to the CBO Supervisor.
  • Maintains effective communication with coworkers and utilizes Payor website systems for registration processes.
  • Adheres to company policies including OSHA, HIPAA, compliance, and Code of Conduct.
  • Works holiday shifts as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience with admitting/registration, insurance claims, or related customer service.

Nice-to-haves

  • One or more years of medical billing customer service experience.
