About the position

The Patient Advocate for Bariatrics at UTHealth Houston is responsible for ensuring medical necessity compliance, verifying patient eligibility, and managing financial interactions with patients. This role emphasizes excellent customer service and attention to detail, as the advocate will interact with patients, insurance companies, and healthcare providers to facilitate smooth patient access to surgical services.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain demographic, insurance, and financial information from patients or guarantors and enter it accurately into the computer system.
  • Schedule patient appointments and ensure timely entry of required information.
  • Explain required forms to patients or guarantors and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Ensure medical necessity compliance by gathering necessary data and communicating with patients or guarantors.
  • Protect the financial integrity of the facility by collecting patient liabilities and establishing payment arrangements.
  • Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, ensuring all notifications and authorizations are completed on time.
  • Post payments in the computer system and generate appropriate patient receipts.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all Patient Access customers, including physicians and insurance companies.
  • Adhere to university policies and standards, managing time and resources effectively.
  • Promote professional growth by meeting continuing education requirements and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in a hospital or medical business office setting.
  • Ability to multi-task and proficient typing/keyboarding skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • EPIC experience is a plus.
