About the position

The Patient Advocate for Bariatrics at UTHealth Houston is responsible for ensuring medical necessity compliance, verifying patient eligibility, and managing financial counseling for patients at the Bellaire Surgical Clinic. This role emphasizes excellent customer service and attention to detail, with a focus on supporting patients through their healthcare journey while maintaining the financial integrity of the facility.

Responsibilities

• Obtain demographic, insurance, and financial information from patients or guarantors and enter it accurately into the computer system.
• Schedule patient appointments and ensure timely entry of required information.
• Explain required forms to patients or guarantors and obtain necessary signatures.
• Ensure medical necessity compliance by gathering necessary data and communicating with patients or guarantors.
• Protect the financial integrity of the facility by collecting patient liabilities and establishing payment arrangements.
• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits, ensuring all notifications and authorizations are completed on time.
• Post payments in the computer system and generate appropriate patient receipts.
• Communicate effectively with physicians, care management, and other departments, as well as patients and their families.
• Adhere to university policies and standards, including time and supply management.
• Promote professional growth by meeting continuing education requirements and serving as a mentor to less experienced staff.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• One year of experience in a hospital or medical business office setting.
• Proficient typing/keyboarding skills.
• Ability to multi-task.

Nice-to-haves

• EPIC experience is a plus.
