About the position

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) role at the University of Southern California (USC) involves providing essential support to nursing staff in a medical-surgical stepdown unit. This per diem position focuses on patient care delivery, clerical functions, and maintaining a safe and organized unit environment. The PCA is responsible for responding to patient needs, assisting with daily activities, and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to patient calls within 10 minutes and anticipate patient needs.
  • Perform essential skills such as taking vitals, daily weights, and assisting with hygiene and mobility.
  • Maintain clear and organized patient rooms and assist with meals and feeding.
  • Ensure a safe physical environment and proper operation of patient-care equipment.
  • Document all care provided, including vital signs and patient care activities.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and visitors, explaining the plan of care and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with the RN regarding patient care and report significant changes in patient condition.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate from an accredited Certified Nursing Program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CA DPH) certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from American Heart Association required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) certification required within 30 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting.
