About the position

St. Luke's University Health Network is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Assistant/Patient Observation Attendant to join our team at the Warren Campus. This part-time position is focused on providing exceptional patient care and support in a healthcare environment. The Patient Care Assistant plays a crucial role in ensuring the comfort and satisfaction of patients while assisting with various medical tasks. The ideal candidate will be committed to the mission of St. Luke's, which emphasizes excellence in patient care, education for healthcare providers, and improving access to care for all patients, regardless of their ability to pay. In this role, the Patient Care Assistant will be responsible for a variety of tasks that contribute to the overall care of patients. This includes monitoring vital signs, measuring intake and output, performing EKGs, conducting glucometry, and assisting with phlebotomy and specimen collection. Documentation of all assigned responsibilities is essential, as is following the treatment plan as directed by licensed personnel. The Patient Care Assistant will also be responsible for ensuring patient comfort, mobilizing patients using proper techniques, and communicating any changes in patients' conditions to the healthcare team. The position requires active participation in unit-based performance improvement initiatives and maintaining awareness of the unit budget. The Patient Care Assistant will also assist in restocking supplies, performing equipment checks, and taking on maintenance duties as appropriate. Professional development is encouraged through participation in in-services and continuing education programs, as well as assisting in the orientation and education of new staff members. This role is vital in supporting the healthcare team and ensuring high-quality patient care is delivered consistently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform vital signs monitoring and intake/output measurements.
  • Conduct EKGs and glucometry tests.
  • Assist with phlebotomy and specimen collection.
  • Document all assigned responsibilities accurately.
  • Follow treatment plans as directed by licensed personnel.
  • Ensure patient comfort and satisfaction with services provided.
  • Mobilize patients using appropriate body mechanics and assistive devices.
  • Communicate changes in patients' conditions to the unit-based team.
  • Restock unit supplies as needed.
  • Perform equipment checks and maintenance duties as appropriate to the unit.
  • Participate in unit-based performance improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of the unit budget.
  • Engage in professional development through in-services and continuing education programs.
  • Assist in orienting and educating new staff members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Basic computer skills are necessary.
  • Entry-level experience in patient observation is preferred.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and push objects up to 10 lbs consistently and up to 75 lbs occasionally.
  • Must be able to transport patients weighing up to 400 lbs via wheelchair, bed, or stretcher.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 60 days of employment or transfer to the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Health care specialty training preferred.
