About the position

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) plays a crucial role in providing personal care and assistance to residents in a senior living facility. This position involves supporting residents with daily living activities, ensuring their comfort, safety, and dignity while promoting their independence. The PCA is responsible for monitoring residents' health, documenting care provided, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Responsibilities

  • Allow residents freedom to move about and exercise their rights as individuals.
  • Provide assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, and other activities of daily living as needed.
  • Assist with personal care needs in grooming hair, nails, teeth, etc.
  • Ensure residents are dressed appropriately in common areas or when leaving the facility.
  • Assist and instruct residents in self-help skills, such as feeding.
  • Assist residents in and out of bed and/or wheelchair as needed.
  • Help residents to the dining room, bathroom, activity room, and outside as needed.
  • Take and record vital signs as ordered by the prescribing provider or delegated by the Medication Technician or Supervisor-In-Charge.
  • Document care provided in the resident's treatment record throughout the shift.
  • Provide personal attention such as bedside water and ice as requested or required.
  • Assist the Activities Coordinator in carrying out planned activities.
  • Help keep residents' clothes cleaned and in proper order.
  • Assist residents with making beds and provide clean linens as needed.
  • Empty contents of urinals and bedpans, as well as trashcans after performing peri-care.
  • Clean equipment as necessary, ensuring bedpans, urinals, and showering devices are cleaned after every use.
  • Serve breaks as scheduled per facility policy.
  • Orient new residents to the facility, staff members, and other residents.
  • Notify Medication Technician or Supervisor-In-Charge of changes in a resident's health or mental status.
  • Activate chain of command during emergency situations.
  • Be familiar with the use of restraints and restraint alternatives.
  • Assist in keeping the facility neat, clean, and odor-free.
  • Document and report any accidents/incidents.
  • Maintain self-respect, personal dignity, and physical safety of each resident.
  • Work cooperatively with staff and relate favorably to residents and their families.
  • Understand and protect residents' confidentiality and health information.
  • Familiarize with facility policies, including fire safety and emergency procedures.
  • Know the resident's bill of rights and assist residents in exercising those rights.
  • Ensure proper use and treatment of equipment and supplies.
  • Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and rules.
  • Participate in job-related training and continuing education courses as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as delegated by the Supervisor-In-Charge, Resident Care Coordinator, or Administrator.

Requirements

  • Complete the Patient Care Assistant training course satisfactorily, including the clinical component.
  • Ability to walk and hear for 75% or more per shift.
  • Far vision, near vision, low to medium levels of lifting, low levels of carrying and pushing/pulling required about 50% per shift.
  • Standing, talking, medium levels of carrying, pushing/pulling required about 25% per shift.
  • Sitting, crouching, climbing, bending/twisting, reaching, very high levels of lifting, high to very high levels of carrying, very high levels of pushing/pulling required about 10% per shift.
  • Required lift for this job classification is 50 lbs.
