About the position

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) position at Houston Methodist is responsible for providing basic patient care and support under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The PCA assists in delivering patient care services to a diverse patient population, ensuring their needs are met through hourly rounding and effective communication with the healthcare team. This role emphasizes patient and family-centered care, adhering to the organization's ICARE values while performing daily living activities and maintaining a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met and report observations to the licensed nurse.
  • Assist with basic patient care activities of daily living (ADLs) such as hygiene, comfort, safety, and nutrition.
  • Document care administered and report pertinent patient information to the healthcare team.
  • Maintain, clean, and stock equipment and supplies on the assigned unit.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional care team to promote effective communication and problem resolution.
  • Support initiatives to improve patient safety and satisfaction scores.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (GED or partial completion of post-secondary education).
  • Completion of a PCA externship, internal internship, or six months of direct patient care experience.
  • Enrollment in a nursing program with a completed first clinical rotation is acceptable.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification (AHA) is required.
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant state licensure is required for Skilled Nursing Facility/Rehab departments.
