About the position

The Patient Care Assistant/Unit Administrative Assistant (PCA/UAA) at Houston Methodist plays a crucial role in supporting the interprofessional team to deliver high-quality, cost-effective patient care. This position involves performing basic patient care activities, assisting with daily living tasks, and ensuring effective communication within the healthcare team under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The PCA/UAA is responsible for maintaining patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction while adhering to the hospital's ICARE values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming telephone calls for the unit and transfer as appropriate.
  • Facilitate and support effective throughput with timely communication.
  • Greet patients and visitors, assisting with directions and information.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team by communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information.
  • Document care administered and treatments in accordance with established policies.
  • Respond to the nurse call system and follow through with meeting patient needs.
  • Organize unit workflow and paperwork, proactively problem-solving and managing priorities.
  • Coordinate requests to Facilities Management and Biomed regarding department needs.
  • Conduct hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met and monitor noise levels.
  • Assist with patient and staffing needs across the service line as competencies allow.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Eighteen months of Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or Patient Care Assistant (PCA) experience.
  • One year of secretarial/office experience or six months of internal cross-training within Houston Methodist.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification.
  • CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant State Licensure for Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)/Rehab departments.
