About the position

The Patient Care Associate in the Emergency Services at NYC Health + Hospitals plays a crucial role in providing clinical and clerical support under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals. This position is essential for ensuring high-quality patient care in a fast-paced emergency department environment, focusing on vital sign monitoring, patient preparation, and effective communication with the healthcare team and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Measure vital signs, height/weight, and head circumference (Pediatrics only), record results, and report findings to licensed professionals.
  • Assist in the preparation and positioning of patients for various tests and examinations.
  • Perform electrocardiographs, vision and hearing tests, and provide documented results to licensed professionals.
  • Prepare, label, and collect various specimens for testing, including phlebotomy.
  • Utilize manual or electronic procedures for necessary documentation.
  • Administer Basic Life Support (BLS) during emergencies.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary stock and supplies, and prepare examination rooms appropriately.
  • Escort and transfer patients to various departments as necessary.
  • Maintain Infection Control standards to ensure patient/employee safety.
  • Exhibit courteous and effective communication with all healthcare team members, patients, and families, respecting cultural diversity.
  • Perform basic functions of a nursing assistant in the Emergency Department.
  • Reinforce instructions given to patients/families by licensed professionals.
  • Provide care to patients throughout the growth and development continuum.
  • Maintain patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of training courses in phlebotomy and electrocardiography (EKG) or equivalent training programs.
  • Valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, diseases, and procedures.
  • Understanding of basic first aid and CPR, with the capability to administer them if needed.
  • Ability to work without supervision and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Good time management skills and physical strength.
