About the position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Dialysis Preceptor plays a crucial role in the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position involves operating hemodialysis machines, maintaining a clean working environment, and supporting quality enhancement programs aimed at improving patient satisfaction and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist other healthcare members in providing patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform vascular access cannulation.
  • Administer heparin as delegated or allowed by state law.
  • Obtain necessary pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention as prescribed by physician order.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy.
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion and document relevant functions for treatment discontinuation.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures and evaluate patient prior to termination of venous access.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Evaluate the patient prior to discharge.
  • Perform and record pre and post-dialysis evaluation, weight, and vital signs with initial identification.
  • Calculate and enter individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal and treatment time as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled on the dialysis machine.
  • Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current certification as a Patient Care Technician or equivalent experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Knowledge of dialysis procedures and patient care protocols.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a dialysis setting preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
