About the position

The Patient Care Technician - Senior at UPMC Community Osteopathic is responsible for providing routine patient care and supporting departmental services to ensure high-quality patient care. This role involves performing essential nursing assistant duties, advanced skills based on departmental needs, and maintaining effective communication with healthcare team members.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
  • Support safety in the workplace and care for patients and self.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally.
  • Perform UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
  • Conduct point of care testing, weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, and HAC & PSI prevention.
  • Perform simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scans, specimen collections, peripheral IV catheter removal, and indwelling Foley catheter removal.
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
  • Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • Constructively receive feedback and direction, and identify learning needs to the unit director.
  • Participate in self-review and project/committee work.
  • Support department-based projects and quality initiatives.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital-related information.
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR
  • 1 year of experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
  • 1 year of experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia course and annual competency required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
