About the position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) in the Vascular Surgery Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at the University of Maryland Medical System provides essential direct patient care under the supervision of professional nursing staff. This role involves monitoring patient vital signs, assisting with daily living activities, and ensuring patient safety and comfort. The PCT plays a vital role in the interdisciplinary team, contributing to patient care and recovery in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Responsibilities

• Takes vital signs and checks surgical dressings.
• Aids patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as feeding, bathing, dressing, and toileting.
• Performs blood draws and collects specimen samples.
• Observes and collects data on patient status to identify needs and provide care.
• Records patient care activities and vital signs including temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
• Assists in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
• Promotes patient safety, including fall prevention.
• Maintains order and appearance of patient rooms and work areas.
• Collaborates with healthcare team members to carry out the plan of care.
• Provides wound care and skin care to promote healing.
• Conducts indwelling urinary catheter care and applies external urinary catheter devices.
• Participates in hourly patient rounding and responds to patient-triggered alarms.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Current Maryland state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Ability to effectively communicate using verbal and written skills.
• Ability to organize work priorities and perform several duties simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

• Previous direct patient care experience in a healthcare facility preferred.
