About the position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) at Fresenius Medical Care North America plays a crucial role in the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This position involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, monitoring patient responses, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulations. The PCT is also responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment and actively participating in quality enhancement and continuous improvement activities to support patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess their well-being since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform cannulation and heparin administration as delegated.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access before treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' responses during therapy.
  • Document treatment parameters and vital signs accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report significant changes in patient conditions to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of new clinical staff and assist in ongoing training for existing staff.
  • Conduct infection control audits and reinforce adherence to infection control practices among staff and patients.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional care.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid PCT national certification or state-specific certification as defined by CMS.
  • At least five years of patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Successful completion of the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.
