About the position

The position functions as part of the dialysis healthcare team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The role involves the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulations. The individual will also participate in quality enhancement programs and continuous quality improvement activities to enhance patient satisfaction and care outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures.
  • Welcome assigned patients and assess their wellbeing since the last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency and perform cannulation as delegated.
  • Obtain pre and post-treatment vital signs and weight, and evaluate vascular access pre-treatment.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders and monitor patients' response.
  • Document treatment parameters and vital signs accurately on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet.
  • Report significant changes in patient condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of new clinical staff.
  • Conduct ongoing competency evaluations for other Patient Care Technicians (PCTs).
  • Assist in training direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Valid PCT national certification or state-specific certification as defined by CMS.
  • At least five years of patient care experience in a hospital setting or related facility preferred.
  • Commitment to organization culture, values, and customer service standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a dialysis setting.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a healthcare team.
