About the position

The Patient Financial Specialist provides financial counseling to uninsured and underinsured patients by screening for potential Medicaid eligibility, assisting with the application process, and providing education regarding the Affordable Care Act. This role involves navigating patients through the marketplace, arranging payment plans, generating price quotes, and providing Intermountain Health Financial Assistance Applications. The specialist educates patients about the Affordable Care Act, including potential eligibility during open enrollment and qualifying life events, and explains qualified health plans, essential health benefits, and differences in plan affordability. They assist individuals in navigating the web-based State or Federal Marketplace and provide patients with an Explanation of Benefits while answering questions related to coverage and billing. The role also includes completing Point of Service Collections, arranging payment plans, and processing contract payments in the Wells Fargo system and Epic. The specialist promotes the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abides by service behavior standards. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provides financial counseling to uninsured/underinsured patients.
  • Screens for potential Medicaid eligibility and assists with the application process.
  • Educates patients about the Affordable Care Act and assists with navigation through the marketplace.
  • Arranges payment plans and generates price quotes.
  • Completes Point of Service Collections of co-pays, deductibles, and deposits.
  • Documents and updates patient accounts in Epic for all interactions/transactions.
  • Completes Patient Estimate process in Epic and communicates outcomes to appropriate site leadership.
  • Identifies patients that may qualify for pharma/foundation co-pay assistance programs and assists with applications.
  • Maximizes patient insurance benefits by partnering with clinical providers.
  • Obtains insurance verification for new patients and cost estimates for treatment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • Ability to read, understand and apply personal tax return information and profit/loss statements.
  • Proficient computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent customer service skills, both written and verbal.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients and their families, physicians, nursing personnel, and co-workers.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of State and Federal Programs available.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid, Medicare, SSDI, and SSI qualification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous experience working with pharmaceutical manufacturers for medication cost assistance/copay assistance programs.
  • Experience in the process of submitting requests for grants/other assistance programs.
  • Knowledge of insurance benefits and reimbursement and ability to answer billing questions.
  • Experience running cost estimates for patients.
