About the position

The Constant Patient Safety Associate (CPSA) is a nursing staff member responsible for providing constant safety observation for patients at risk of harm. The CPSA aims to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment through direct observation and support of daily living activities, functioning under the supervision of an RN or LPN. This role is crucial in ensuring patient safety and comfort, particularly for those at risk of self-harm or behavioral issues.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the direct observation of assigned patient as directed by the assigned RN or LPN.
  • Utilizes resources needed to support a safe environment for the assigned patient.
  • Maintains personal safety when caring for assigned patient.
  • Obtains report from the previous CPSA and/or assigned nurse to identify rationale for constant observation and effective interventions.
  • Identifies potential risks or hazards to patient safety and reports them to the assigned nurse.
  • Uses communication skills and appropriate interventions to maintain patient safety and prevent harm.
  • Supports activities of daily living including feeding, ambulation, bathing, and positioning of patients who require minimal assistance.
  • Assists other nursing staff with care as needed.
  • Supports plans of care by providing role-appropriate therapeutic interventions as directed by PT/OT/SLP/TR.
  • Documents observations in a timely manner using the appropriate form.
  • Reports observations and recommendations for ongoing observation to the assigned nurse at the end of the shift.

Requirements

  • Certified Nursing Assistant training or being a student in an accredited School of Nursing or other health care professional program.
  • Effective verbal, electronic, and written communication skills in English.
  • Some computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to maintain a variable work schedule to meet department needs.

  • At least one clinical rotation in an inpatient setting.
  • Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Anticipates challenges and develops strategies for addressing them.
  • Attention to detail in documentation.
