About the position

The Patient Services Representative at UChicago Medicine plays a crucial role in the Radiation Oncology Clinic by managing patient interactions, scheduling medical procedures, and providing exceptional customer service. This position involves handling preadmission, registration, discharge, and transfer processes, as well as addressing financial and billing inquiries from patients.

Responsibilities

  • Greets and registers patients upon arrival, collecting necessary demographic and insurance information.
  • Performs pre and post-billing functions, responding to patient inquiries and resolving charge disputes.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and obtains necessary authorizations for outpatient services.
  • Identifies patients needing additional community resources for follow-up care.
  • Provides financial counseling to patients and explains hospital payment policies.
  • Initiates resolution of accounts with collection agencies and processes payments.
  • Resolves patient questions and complaints, referring escalated issues as needed.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports, maintaining organized files.
  • Assists with general clerical duties as needed within the department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain effective relationships with patients and staff.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with independent thinking and sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and handle challenging situations effectively.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Basic office skills including typing at 35 wpm and 4500 keystrokes per hour.
  • Ability to accurately enter alphanumeric data on screen.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and software applications, including Epic.
  • Successful completion of competencies related to the Cadence Scheduling system and Point of Service Collection policy.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Prior experience in a practice setting with knowledge of insurance protocols.
