The specialist is responsible for lifting, standing, and pushing patients in wheelchairs and on gurneys, which requires a high level of physical strength and stamina. The role demands a friendly, positive, and professional demeanor when interacting with patients, families, and visitors, as well as the ability to adapt to various situations when transporting patients of all ages, including children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. In addition to patient transport duties, the specialist assists patients and their families in navigating the hospital campus, ensuring they reach their destinations safely and efficiently. The role also involves transferring patients from one surface or location to another, assisting them in walking, sitting up, and moving between support devices. The specialist must be proficient in using various equipment, including beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and medical devices, while maintaining a high standard of customer service. The position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to respond quickly to stat calls throughout the hospital. The specialist must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, sound math and analytical skills, and basic computer skills for dispatching and two-way radio communications. Additionally, the role involves documentation of activities in a logbook and maintaining cleanliness of equipment after patient use. The specialist must also verify patient identification and retrieve necessary supplies or linens from supply rooms, ensuring compliance with Bronson policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients and families in navigating throughout the campus.
  • Transfer patients from one surface or location to another.
  • Assist patients in walking, sitting up, and moving from one support device to another.
  • Push and pull beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, and rental beds while occupied and unoccupied across different surfaces.
  • Lift, pull, or operate heavy equipment including beds, IV poles, IV pumps, oxygen tanks, and morgue carts.
  • Maintain knowledge of unit locations and procedures areas.
  • Contact nursing and support staff for information and assistance.
  • Utilize equipment such as slider boards and oxygen tanks appropriately.
  • Handle and transfer medical equipment including Foley catheters and monitors.
  • Clean equipment after patient use and document activities in a logbook.
  • Maintain customer service standards and explain activities to patients and families.
  • Verify patient identification and retrieve needed supplies or linens from supply rooms.
  • Transport visitors between campuses and transfer expired patients to the morgue.
  • Prepare and retrieve bodies for family viewing and respond to code zero pages.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • 6 months related customer service work experience required.
  • BLS certification required within the first 90 days.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in the use of Teletracking and Spectra telephones is necessary.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills essential.
  • Proven organization skills are essential.
  • Sound math, counting, and analytical skills are required.
  • Ability to move quickly throughout the hospital on stat calls.
