About the position

Monmouth University Campus Police Department is seeking applications for multiple Patrol Officer I positions. This role is designed for entry-level applicants who may not possess current training and certification as police officers in New Jersey. Such candidates will be required to attend the New Jersey Police Academy, meet the requirements for the Basic Police Course, and commit to employment as a Patrol Officer with Monmouth University for a period of three years. The university will cover the costs associated with attending the police academy training, and trainees will be compensated at minimum wage during this period. As a Patrol Officer, you will be part of an assigned team responsible for providing campus safety, security, and law enforcement services to the University community. This includes a wide range of services, both traditional and non-traditional, aimed at ensuring the safety and security of the campus environment. The successful candidate must project a positive image and actively participate in crime prevention and community-oriented public safety programming that reflects the diverse population of the University. In this role, you will enforce University regulations, local ordinances, and state laws. You will act as a first responder to incidents, accidents, and emergencies, conducting initial and follow-up investigations into significant and criminal incidents. The position requires working under the direction of a Sergeant, Captain, or Chief of Police, and it is important to note that the University Police Department operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Therefore, the successful candidate must be available to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required by departmental needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide foot and vehicular patrol to detect security problems and safety hazards across the University campus.
  • Complete training and become familiar with dispatch functions.
  • Participate in directed patrol activities to observe and detect unusual activities or violations of the law.
  • Conduct investigations, make arrests, issue summons, and enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Deter, restrain, and/or arrest individuals attempting to inflict harm or commit criminal acts.
  • Support the University's diversity commitment and student-centered vision.
  • Maintain radio contact with headquarters and police personnel.
  • Regulate and control pedestrian and vehicular traffic to ensure safety and efficient movement.
  • Provide quality customer service to the University community.
  • Provide basic first aid until the arrival of local EMS.
  • Maintain knowledge of current state, county, and local laws relevant to the position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be an entry-level applicant or possess a current New Jersey Basic Course for Police Officer Certification, or be a Special Officer Class II (SLEO II) eligible for a waiver of training.
  • Must meet all conditions outlined by the New Jersey Police Training Commission licensing requirements.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and respond to emergency call-ins as needed.
  • Mental and physical ability to maintain high levels of exertion in emergencies.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry suspects, prisoners, and victims to safe areas.
  • Ability to safely handle assigned weapons and qualify at the designated range bi-annually.
  • Valid driver's license with less than three violations or at-fault accidents in the past three years.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's degree or two years of college, trade school, or equivalent education; Bachelor's degree is highly preferred.
  • Higher Education public safety experience is a plus.
  • Two years of work and life experience related to community service, interviewing, public speaking, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Problem-solving skills using creative methods to resolve issues.
  • Multi-cultural work and life experiences.
