About the position

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C., is seeking a Paving Technician to join our team in Manassas, Virginia. This full-time position involves diagnosing problems and performing standard mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and power-train repairs on paving equipment both in our shops and at customer job sites. The role requires flexibility, as it may involve working hours beyond the normal schedule for emergency calls or routine service, which could necessitate overnight stays with short notice. Candidates should possess in-depth product knowledge and experience, particularly with Caterpillar or related paving products, military diesel experience, or completion of a diesel school program. The Paving Technician will also be responsible for performing Pre-Delivery inspections of paving products and demonstrating product operation to customers. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work with limited supervision and has a strong mechanical background with troubleshooting skills. They must be able to independently and accurately diagnose and repair equipment, with a solid understanding of paving machine applications, operation, and function. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, or the ability to obtain one, along with the capability to become DOT certified with a DOT Medical Card. Proficiency in using computers, Microsoft Office products, and service software is essential for completing service reports and providing pertinent details for work orders. Excellent customer satisfaction skills and the ability to project a positive professional image are crucial, as is the ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms. The Paving Technician must prepare required documentation, including work orders, parts lists, and time cards, accurately and in a timely manner. Overtime may be required based on job and customer demand, and candidates should be willing to travel as necessary.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose problems and perform mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and power-train repairs on paving equipment.
• Work in shops and at customer job sites, requiring flexibility in hours and potential overnight stays.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Strong mechanical background and troubleshooting skills; able to independently and accurately diagnose and repair equipment.
• Solid understanding of paving machine applications, operation, and function.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one; must become DOT certified with a DOT Medical Card.
