About the position

The Payment Operations Manager at Northern Trust is responsible for overseeing the Payments group within the Cash Management Practice. This role involves managing a team, applying operational and strategic management skills, and collaborating with senior leaders to develop and execute strategic and financial objectives. The manager will focus on enhancing service delivery, streamlining processes, and ensuring the financial health of the practice while maintaining quality service and compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the performance and results of the Payments division.
  • Conduct the performance management process, identify training and development needs, and establish performance standards for the Practice.
  • Manage hiring, performance reviews, pay decisions, and development.
  • Execute business plans and contribute to the development of functional strategy.
  • Assess opportunities to streamline processes and implement changes via system enhancements and/or automation.
  • Build relationships and partner with capability teams to uncover opportunities and develop strategies to improve service.
  • Define the function and necessary production organization to carry out business objectives.
  • Research and coordinate enhancements and transformation.
  • Support Cash Management Business in providing new ideas and thought leadership.
  • Maintain quality service with future considerations and ensure changes match industry trends and client expectations.
  • Manage the financial health of the practice and remain within budget.
  • Advocate for cost-effective strategies that meet client needs.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous efficiencies, scale, and value.
  • Organize the functional Payments work from a process and locational regulatory standpoint.
  • Provide overall risk, control, and operational resiliency.
  • Coordinate operational response to complex issues and deliver quality solutions.

Requirements

  • Strong process and operations management experience.
  • Ability to lead through subordinate managers.
  • Experience in large-stream group management.
  • Cash Management and Payments Operations experience.
  • Experience in developing functional/operational long-term strategy and business plans.

Nice-to-haves

  • Broad Cash Management industry knowledge and awareness to drive financial performance.
  • Deep functional knowledge of the entire Payments ecosystem, including Payments and Cash, Wires, ACH.
  • Strong leadership and forethought to lead the function.
  • Thought leadership and the ability to bring new ideas to the function.
