About the position

The Payroll Accounting Specialist at Valero is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state payroll tax processes for all company entities, including international operations. This role involves interaction with the accounting department for reconciliations and budget preparation, as well as direct communication with federal and state agencies regarding payroll tax inquiries. The specialist will compute and deposit payroll tax payments, prepare tax returns, and handle year-end tasks such as W-2 preparation. Additionally, the position supports both international and US in-house payrolls and assists with special projects as needed.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with federal and state payroll tax processes for all company entities.
• Interact with the accounting department regarding inquiries, reconciliations, and budget preparation.
• Compute and deposit payroll tax payments and reconcile monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll tax returns.
• Communicate with federal and state agencies regarding inquiries and maintain employer accounts.
• Perform year-end tasks including balancing and preparing W-2 forms and electronic submission to the SSA.
• Prepare monthly general ledger reconciliations for payroll-related expense and liability accounts.
• Set up and remit third-party vendors for garnishments, credit union, union dues, and other deductions.
• Process and support international and US in-house payrolls, including expat shadow payrolls.
• Assist with preparation of the annual budget for payroll and payroll-related expenses.
• Perform special projects and other assignments as requested by management.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 5 years of accounting and payroll tax filing experience with multi-state required.
• Bachelor's or higher-level degree in Accounting or related field preferred.
• Ability and willingness to work on-site at the Valero San Antonio location.
