About the position

The Payroll and Benefits Coordinator at CompassMSP is responsible for managing payroll administration and benefits coordination within the People Operations Department. This role ensures accurate processing of payroll, compliance with federal and state regulations, and effective management of employee benefits. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and capable of handling sensitive information while contributing to a positive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all payroll administration including importing, proofing, editing, processing, and transmitting payroll wages, deductions, reimbursements, bonuses, commissions, and manual payments on a semi-monthly basis.
  • Process 401K setups and payments, as well as flexible spending accounts and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Recommend, implement, and maintain payroll best practices to improve efficiency and consult with the People Ops team to enhance payroll and HRIS processes.
  • Maintain a system of personnel files to effectively track, store, and retrieve personnel information.
  • Ensure all state and federal payroll compliance and reporting is up to date including tax registrations.
  • Manage COBRA and Unemployment as needed.
  • Manage commissions payments working directly with the sales team.
  • Manage year-end process for benefits and payroll tie out.
  • Become an in-house benefit specialist, providing timely answers and solutions regarding benefits.
  • Work with the leadership team to propose, develop, and implement a comprehensive suite of benefits.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop and execute wellness initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance of all benefits and filings.
  • Work with Finance on annual audits (401k, Workers Comp, Benefits, Payroll).
  • Conduct internal audits as required for payroll and benefits.
  • Assist Recruiting and People Operations to ensure new teammate onboarding tasks are completed timely.
  • Work with regional leaders and People Operations team to ensure timely completion of employee offboarding tasks.
  • Maintain personnel files and People Operations systems/programs/tools, creating scheduled and ad-hoc reports pertaining to payroll/People Ops, and complete verifications of employment.
  • Assist and support People Ops with employee engagement initiatives and other projects as needed.
  • Design, manage, and launch projects with proper communication.
  • Analyze and collect data and present it in an easily interpretable format.
  • Interpret data trends and patterns.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in payroll processing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong time management skills to ensure timely and accurate payroll transactions.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state regulations.
  • Working knowledge of accounting fundamentals and payroll best practices.
  • Strong critical and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll/HRIS software (Paycor) and ATS/Onboarding applications.
  • Trustworthy with sensitive and confidential information related to payroll and People Operations.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events and manage competing demands.
