About the position

The Payroll and Benefits Manager at Wabash College is responsible for overseeing payroll and benefits administration, ensuring compliance with regulations, and managing all payroll processes. This role involves executing payroll processing, managing compensation and benefits data, and resolving any processing issues to maintain accurate payroll records.

Responsibilities

  • Manage system and business processes related to payroll, tax, and benefits transactions.
  • Implement, maintain, and review payroll processing systems and procedures to ensure timely and accurate processing of salaries and wages, benefits, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Develop and execute the payroll calendar, conduct pre-payroll quality assurance reviews, schedule payroll interface jobs, confirm file transmissions, and resolve payroll job errors.
  • Oversee administrative system updates and testing for system patches, updates, upgrades, and rate changes.
  • Ensure timely payments to benefit providers and tax entities that are a result of payroll processes.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports of payroll and payroll charge transactions.
  • Reconcile transactions and data between the payroll module, payables module, and the general ledger.
  • Manage non-resident employee tax matters, including evaluation of applicable tax treaties.
  • Support account management needs related to payroll charges, reconcile payroll transactions, manage position vacancies and position budgets, and collaborate on institutional salary projection processes.
  • Support the annual raise, calendar year end reporting, and benefits enrollment processes.
  • Maintain business process documents or procedures for all payroll and benefits processes.
  • Incorporate best practices in payroll and benefits operations.
  • Functionally supervise a business assistant for human resources and payroll.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in human resource management, accounting, or business management required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of experience managing and processing payroll and benefits transactions; experience in higher education or related entity preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification preferred.
  • Strong analytical and business process skills required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and use of administrative systems required.
  • Ability to collaborate with the college community, including senior management, employees, students, and third-party business partners and vendors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in higher education or related entity preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification preferred.
