About the position

The Payroll and Benefits Technician position at the City of Jacksonville Beach involves performing skilled clerical, technical, and administrative work related to payroll and benefits management. The role includes maintaining the payroll system and employee database, processing personnel actions, and ensuring compliance with statutory requirements. The position is supervised by the Payroll & Benefits Lead and requires a high degree of discretion and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist with payroll processing and benefits administration.
• Maintain and prepare complex and confidential payroll and personnel files.
• Create personnel, payroll, financial, and other City business documents and reports.
• Process personnel actions and verify accuracy and completeness of forms.
• Collect and prepare data for records, reports, and surveys.
• Assist with new software implementation and ongoing maintenance.
• Review data for accuracy, completeness, and conformance to established standards and policies.
• Assist timekeepers with payroll personnel questions, alterations, and approvals.
• Help balance payroll and identify and correct errors.
• Operate standard office equipment and personal computers.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Courses in payroll, business, or accounting preferred.
• Experience in human resources or payroll preferred.
• Thorough knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
• Strong knowledge of business English, spelling, grammar, and math.
• Ability to maintain office records and prepare accurate reports.
• Ability to perform and organize work independently.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with payroll software such as Epic.
• Knowledge of the organization and functions of the City.
