About the position

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for preparing and processing complex payroll transactions and related documents while providing customer service to agency employees. This role involves applying relevant policies and regulations, maintaining payroll records, calculating payroll liabilities, and ensuring compliance with state requirements. The position also emphasizes continuous process improvement and effective communication with both internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process complex payroll transactions and related documents.
  • Answer standard payroll questions and provide payroll customer service to agency employees.
  • Process payroll records by entering changes in exemptions, job title, and department/division transfers.
  • Provide payroll information to supervisors, customers, and other approved persons.
  • Determine payroll liabilities by calculating employee federal and state income and social security taxes, as well as employer's social security, unemployment, and workers compensation payments.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information and implementing changes.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement efforts to support current and future systems enhancements.
  • Prepare payroll reports by compiling summaries of information such as earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of payroll records and adhere to all New York State regulatory requirements and SUNY policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.
  • Ability to analyze information and possess strong data entry skills with a focus on high-quality work.
  • Close attention to detail, confidentiality, thoroughness, general math skills, reporting skills, verbal and written communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient with MS Office suite and a variety of electronic database systems.
  • Computer skills and keyboarding are necessary.
