Hiram College is seeking a Payroll / HRIS Specialist to join our team. This position will work under the supervision of the Executive Director of Human Resources and the Payroll Director to support payroll processing and daily human resources administration. The Payroll / HRIS Specialist will be responsible for processing monthly and biweekly payrolls for staff, faculty, and students. This includes checking timesheets for accuracy, calculating the correct amount of overtime, deductions, bonuses, etc., with the assistance of the payroll system. The role requires knowledge of Federal, State, and Local tax withholdings, processing of wage garnishment orders, and general ledger mapping. The specialist must also understand the differences between Exempt and Non-Exempt employees and be familiar with FLSA rules. Additionally, the position involves processing employee changes in the Banner HRIS/Payroll system, generating ad hoc reports for both HR and Finance teams, and maintaining confidentiality while working with sensitive information. The Payroll / HRIS Specialist will also support the 401K process, assist with benefits-related transactional tasks in Banner, maintain employee data, assist with data audits, and ensure data quality is correct and complete. It is essential for the specialist to ensure that Banner complies with laws, regulations, and company policies while collaborating with HR and other departments to improve processes and make necessary changes.

Responsibilities

  • Process monthly and biweekly payrolls for staff, faculty, and students.
  • Check timesheets for accuracy.
  • Calculate the correct amount of overtime, deductions, bonuses, etc. with the assistance of the payroll system.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local tax withholdings.

  • Knowledge of Exempt vs Non-Exempt employee classifications.
  • Understand FLSA rules.
  • Process employee changes in Banner HRIS/Payroll system.

  • Work confidentially with discretion.
  • Meet time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Respond timely to employment wage verification requests.
  • Answer questions regarding paychecks, withholding tax issues or wage adjustments from employees and help troubleshoot possible pay issues.
  • Support 401K process.
  • Assist with benefits related transactional tasks in Banner.
  • Maintain employee data in Banner.
  • Assist with data audits and ensure data quality is correct and complete.
  • Ensure that Banner complies with laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Collaborate with HR and other departments to improve processes and make necessary changes.

Requirements

  • At least 2-3 years of experience processing payroll.
  • Advanced computer skills, including data entry, data processing, and communication tools.
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information discreetly and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and be detail-oriented.
  • Knowledge of HR regulations, laws, and best practices.
  • Experience with Benefits deductions as it relates to pay.
  • Customer-oriented mindset.
  • College coursework in accounting, business, or related fields is a plus.
