About the position

A medium-sized company located in Los Angeles is seeking a reliable, focused, team-player, and trustworthy Payroll Manager to lead the payroll department. The Payroll Manager will supervise a team of five employees in the Payroll Department and will be responsible for overseeing the payroll for over 3,000 employees across the company on a semi-monthly basis. This role involves developing systems to process payroll account transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, deductions, taxes, and third-party payments. The Payroll Manager will coordinate timekeeping and payroll systems, ensuring that payroll changes such as new hires, terminations, raises, and system upgrades are processed accurately and efficiently. In addition to overseeing payroll processing, the Payroll Manager will ensure compliance with relevant laws and internal policies. This includes supervising and coaching payroll clerks and assistants, creating and coordinating end-user training, and liaising with auditors to manage payroll tax audits. The Payroll Manager will collaborate closely with the Human Resources (HR) and Accounting Departments to maintain accurate records and prepare reports. Resolving payroll-related issues and answering questions from employees will also be a key responsibility. The Payroll Manager will communicate with the payroll provider and other professionals to guarantee that payroll processing and distribution are completed on time. Furthermore, the role requires creating custom reports as requested by different departments and maintaining current knowledge of applicable state and federal wage and hour laws. The Payroll Manager will also build a process for monitoring, auditing, and analyzing payroll operations to ensure effective and efficient functioning, while performing other duties as assigned by the Controller or CFO.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise 5 employees in the Payroll Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Human Resource or related field.
  • Professional certification such as CPP, CPM is a plus.
  • Minimum of five (5) years proven experience as a payroll manager or similar role.
  • Updated knowledge of payroll procedures and related laws.
  • Excellent understanding of California payroll and taxes.
  • Adept with ADP payroll system and E-time or any similar payroll software.
  • Proficiency at using Microsoft Office with advanced level skill in Microsoft Excel.
  • A keen eye for detail.
  • An analytical mind and good math skills.
  • Outstanding communication skills both written and oral.
  • Great organizational and leadership skills.
  • Good customer service and work ethics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow for appropriate interaction with all levels of employees (from hourly to executive).
  • High level of skills in handling sensitive and confidential information with the demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
