About the position

A medium-sized company located in Los Angeles is seeking a reliable, focused, team-player, and trustworthy Payroll Manager to lead the payroll department. This position is crucial as it involves overseeing the payroll for over 3,000 employees on a semi-monthly basis. The Payroll Manager will be responsible for developing systems to process payroll account transactions, which include salaries, benefits, garnishments, deductions, taxes, and third-party payments. The role requires coordination of timekeeping and payroll systems, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and internal policies, and supervising a team of five payroll clerks and assistants. In addition to managing payroll processing, the Payroll Manager will oversee payroll changes such as new hires, terminations, raises, and system upgrades. The position also involves creating and coordinating end-user training, liaising with auditors, and managing payroll tax audits. Collaboration with the Human Resource (HR) and Accounting departments is essential to maintain accurate records and prepare reports. The Payroll Manager will resolve issues and answer payroll-related questions, communicate with the payroll provider and other professionals, and guarantee timely payroll processing and distribution. Custom reports will be created as requested by different departments, and the manager will maintain current knowledge of applicable state and federal wage and hour laws. The role also includes building a process for monitoring, auditing, and analyzing payroll operations, along with performing other duties as assigned by the Controller or CFO.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise 5 employees in the Payroll Department
  • Oversee payroll for 3,000 or more employees semi-monthly
  • Develop systems to process payroll account transactions such as salaries, benefits, garnishments, deductions, taxes, and third-party payments
  • Coordinate timekeeping and payroll systems
  • Oversee processing of payroll changes like new hires, terminations, raises, and system upgrades
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws and internal policies
  • Supervise and coach payroll clerks and assistants
  • Create and coordinate end-user training
  • Liaise with auditor and manage payroll tax audits
  • Collaborate with Human Resource (HR) and Accounting Department
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare reports
  • Resolve issues and answer payroll-related questions
  • Communicate with the payroll provider and other professionals
  • Guarantee timely payroll processing and distribution
  • Create custom reports as requested by different departments

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, Human Resource or related field
  • Professional certification such as CPP, CPM is a plus
  • Minimum of five (5) years proven experience as a payroll manager or similar role
  • Updated knowledge of payroll procedures and related laws
  • Excellent understanding of California payroll and taxes
  • Adept with ADP payroll system and E-time or any similar payroll software
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office with advanced level skill in Microsoft Excel
  • A keen eye for detail
  • An analytical mind and good math skills
  • Outstanding communication skills both written and oral
  • Great organizational and leadership skills
  • Good customer service and work ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that allow for appropriate interaction with all levels of employees
  • High level of skills in handling sensitive and confidential information with the demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality
