About the position

The Payroll Manager at Massachusetts Bay Community College is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day payroll operations, ensuring accurate processing of payroll for full-time and part-time employees, and managing timekeeping systems. This role involves collaboration with the Payroll Director and requires a commitment to equity and inclusion within a diverse educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and prepare a bi-weekly payroll balance for review and approval.
  • Monitor entries to correct prior pay period discrepancies and prepare pay period reconciliation.
  • Assist with processing payments for adjunct professors and hourly paid instructors based on contract rates.
  • Help prepare bi-weekly payroll payment input schedule and organize supporting paperwork for audits.
  • Serve on the SSTA implementation team and ensure proper procedures are in place for a successful transition.
  • Delegate payroll accounts and data set-ups to HR/CMS, PeopleSoft, and State Financial systems.
  • Assist Payroll Director with cash funding analysis and system changes.
  • Prepare biweekly payroll entry upload of payment charges for input into the school's ledger system.
  • Oversee and delegate miscellaneous input to Payroll Accountants, including compensation requests and deductions.
  • Research errors and discrepancies and communicate findings to the Payroll Director.
  • Provide training on the SSTA system to employees and managers.
  • Respond to questions and requests from staff and faculty regarding payroll matters.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of payroll reports and submit to the finance office.
  • Assist with unemployment inquiries and retirement distributions.
  • Serve as primary backup and support for the Payroll Director.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of progressive experience in payroll, finance, or business management.
  • Knowledge of state and federal payroll laws.
  • Extensive working knowledge of computer applications for maintaining records and generating reports.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to follow through on projects.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
