About the position

As a Senior Payroll Manager at Kelly, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the payroll processes for a premium client located in Alameda, California. This position requires a deep understanding of payroll systems, particularly Workday Payroll, and the ability to analyze and review payroll reports effectively. You will be responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions, which include employee compensation, leaves of absence (LOAs), benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions. Your analytical skills will be essential as you will need to analyze payroll and benefits data, review Workday reports, and provide necessary documentation to meet audit requirements. In this role, you will manage a team of payroll analysts, providing them with training, coaching, and oversight of their payroll analyses. Collaboration with HR and accounting departments will be key, as you will assist with audits and compliance matters. You will also ensure that payroll updates, new hires, terminations, changes to pay rates, and stock transactions are processed accurately and efficiently. Compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and best practices is paramount, and you will be responsible for addressing employee inquiries regarding compensation and ensuring SOX compliance with internal control policies. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in payroll management, particularly in multi-state payroll processing for large employee groups. You will be expected to review and update payroll processes and procedures as necessary, and perform other related functions and ad hoc projects as assigned. Your expertise will contribute significantly to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the payroll function within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Workday bi-weekly and off-cycle payroll processes to ensure timely, accurate and efficient processing of payroll transactions including employee compensation, LOA's, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Analyze related payroll/benefits data, review Workday reports, and provide documentation per audit requirements.
  • Manage payroll analysts and provide training, coaching and review of their payroll analyses.
  • Collaborate with HR and accounting and assist with audits and other compliance matters.
  • Ensure processing of payroll updates, new hires, terminations, changes to pay rates, and stock transactions (NQ, RSU, PSU), as needed.
  • Review/update payroll processes and procedures, as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and related employment laws and best practices.
  • Address employee inquiries regarding compensation.
  • Ensure SOX compliance with internal control policies.
  • Perform other related functions and ad hoc projects, as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and 7+ years of related experience; or Master's degree in related discipline and 5+ years of related experience.
  • Experience using Workday Payroll and analyzing/reviewing Workday payroll reports.
  • Demonstrated ownership, problem-solving and analytical skills (using Microsoft Excel).
  • Familiarity with payroll regulations and tax law in multiple states.
  • Equivalent experience of 10 years.
  • Experience in multi-state payroll processing for 1,000+ employees.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant certifications such as CPP, CPM, PCP are helpful.
