About the position

Robert Half is seeking a Senior Payroll Manager for a client located in Northwest Houston. This role is critical for managing all aspects of payroll processing for a large organization with over 12,000 employees across multiple states and companies. The ideal candidate will have extensive payroll expertise and strong leadership capabilities, along with excellent communication skills. Proficiency in advanced Microsoft Excel is essential, and familiarity with SAP is required, while experience with Dayforce is considered an added advantage. The Senior Payroll Manager will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with state and federal regulations, and the development of payroll policies and procedures to enhance accuracy and efficiency. This position requires a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality, as well as the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, mentor, and develop a team of 7+ payroll staff to ensure accurate and timely payroll process.
  • Oversee the processes for payroll calculations, deductions, and benefits administration for the company, carried out in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Manage all local, state, and federal tax filings.
  • Develop and implement payroll policies and procedures to streamline the process and enhance accuracy.
  • Liaise with HR, Accounting, and other departments to ensure proper flow of data.
  • Analyze periodic payroll reports and present to management.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies and irregularities.
  • Ensure all payroll information and records are maintained in accordance with statutory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in payroll management, preferably in a multi-state, multi-site organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Experience with SAP; Dayforce experience is a plus.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation is preferred.
  • Strong leadership skills, along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective decision making, problem solving, and time management skills.
  • High degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • In-depth understanding and experience in multi-state payroll, including payroll for union employees.
  • Strong auditing skills are required.
  • Experience in full cycle payroll management is crucial.
  • Must have the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary.
  • Familiarity with current payroll tax requirements and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification from the American Payroll Association (APA) is a plus.
  • Experience in implementing payroll software is a plus.
