About the position

The Payroll Operations Manager will lead a team of seven payroll professionals, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing while promoting a culture of service excellence. This role involves overseeing payroll operations, managing performance metrics, and serving as a point of escalation for complex payroll issues. The manager will also support compliance audits and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local payroll regulations.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of payroll specialists to ensure accurate and timely payroll execution.
• Drive a culture of service excellence within the payroll team.
• Review daily work performance of direct reports and address any gaps in performance.
• Monitor established payroll processing metrics and manage team performance against these metrics.
• Ensure accurate payroll processing, reconciliation, and recordkeeping for multi-state payroll.
• Oversee payroll deductions for employee contributions, including insurance and garnishments.
• Ensure timely execution of payroll reporting processes and develop action plans to mitigate operational risks.
• Serve as a point of escalation for high-risk payroll questions and issues from employees.
• Oversee the overpayment process and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
• Support SOX and other compliance audits, including pre-audit and post-audit activities.

Requirements

• Experience in payroll operations management.
• Knowledge of SOX compliance and payroll processing regulations.
• Strong leadership skills to manage and develop a team.
• Ability to analyze payroll metrics and performance data.
• Experience with multi-state payroll processing.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in accounting or finance (1 year preferred).
• Familiarity with federal contracting standards and union payroll issues.
