About the position

The Payroll Specialist I position is responsible for coordinating, leading, and performing professional payroll processing activities for the County of Kaua'i. This includes generating, reconciling, and recording the County's semi-monthly payroll, serving as a resource for the payroll system, and performing related duties as required. The role requires a strong understanding of payroll practices, particularly in a government setting, and the ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and lead payroll processing activities.
  • Generate and reconcile the County's semi-monthly payroll.
  • Record payroll transactions accurately.
  • Serve as a resource for the County's payroll system.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in accounting, business administration, or related field.
  • One (1) year of specialized work experience in payroll processing and payroll pre-auditing and analysis.
  • Knowledge of general accounting and payroll practices, preferably in a government setting.
  • Ability to understand and interpret regulations, resolutions, contracts, and ordinances.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive personal information of employees.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with management information systems.
  • Familiarity with applicable Federal and State laws, ordinances, fiscal policies, and regulations.
