About the position

Bering Straits Native Corporation is currently seeking a qualified Payroll Specialist II for our Accounting/Payroll Department in Anchorage, AK. The Payroll Specialist II will play a crucial role in the preparation, processing, and reconciliation of complex payrolls for employees across multiple states and companies. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of payroll processes, including the calculation of various exemption items such as bonuses, garnishments, and terminations. The Payroll Specialist II will also be responsible for ensuring timely and accurate periodic and quarterly tax payments and filings, which are essential for compliance with government regulations. In addition to the core payroll functions, the Payroll Specialist II will be tasked with auditing and processing incoming payroll data, assisting departments with applicable forms and processes, and maintaining accurate employee leave records. The role involves the accurate review, setup, and processing of court-ordered involuntary deductions, which may require communication with relevant agencies. Furthermore, the Payroll Specialist II will compile, enter, scan, and email all Davis Bacon certified reports for the assigned companies, ensuring compliance with federal regulations. The position also includes responsibilities for training and mentoring new technicians, fostering a cooperative working environment, and demonstrating sensitivity to a diverse population. The Payroll Specialist II will be expected to perform other related duties as assigned within the Payroll Department, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of payroll operations.

Responsibilities

  • Full payroll process for multi-state employees including auditing and processing incoming payroll data.
  • Calculation of exemption items such as bonuses, garnishments, and terminations.
  • Compiling, copying, and ensuring all filing and payroll reports are filed accurately and timely.
  • Review and update employee leave records.
  • Accurate review, setup, and processing of court-ordered involuntary deductions, including communication with agencies regarding orders.
  • Compiling, entering, scanning, and emailing all Davis Bacon certified reports for assigned companies.
  • Establishing and maintaining employee/payroll records.
  • Periodic and quarterly tax payments and filings to government agencies for assigned companies.
  • Assisting in training and mentoring new technicians.
  • Maintaining cooperative working relationships and demonstrating sensitivity to a diverse population.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • One to two years of progressively complex payroll processing experience required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of payroll taxes and deductions computation.
  • Ability to meet weekly deadlines and balance multiple competing priorities under deadlines.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Ability to operate office machines, including a computer, copier, fax, and 10-key by touch.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and designing forms.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing clearly.
