About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at H&R Block is a seasonal role focused on compiling and entering payroll data, computing and posting wages, and reconciling errors to ensure accurate payroll processing. The specialist will be responsible for entering payroll data into the payroll system, reviewing computed wages, and correcting any errors to maintain payroll accuracy. This role involves processing reversals and adjustments to correct issued checks, verifying the accuracy of employee and employer payroll tax codes, and preparing payroll tax expense reports for submission to the payroll tax department. In addition to these tasks, the Payroll Specialist will analyze and reconcile output reports through calculations, comparisons, and payroll count tests. They will maintain logs for annual bonuses and incentive payments, ensuring accurate withholding and timely delivery of pay-over detail reports to various employee benefit plans, including flexible spending plans and 401(k) savings plans. The role also includes conducting account reconciliations on payroll-related general ledger accounts and making necessary correcting entries. Other duties may be assigned as needed. The position is anticipated to start in November 2024, and candidates should be prepared to meet critical deadlines while demonstrating strong analytical skills and a thorough understanding of payroll-related laws and regulations. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Compiles payroll data and enters it into the payroll system.

Requirements

  • A minimum of six hours of college-level accounting or equivalent education and experience.
  • At least one year of experience in payroll processing in a multi-state environment.
  • Ability to organize work to meet critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, including analysis of large reports.
  • Thorough knowledge of Wage and Hour laws and payroll-related regulations.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Advanced numerical ability and reading comprehension.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associate's Degree in Accounting or related field.
  • A minimum of three years of payroll experience in a multi-state environment.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft payroll processing.
  • Technical skills in using a Windows-based computer system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
