About the position

The Payroll Specialist Senior will join the Tax Section of the Payroll Office at the University of Michigan, responsible for managing tax information and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations. This role may be filled at either the senior or intermediate level based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The position involves a combination of data management, tax remittance preparation, and collaboration with various stakeholders within the university.

Responsibilities

  • Gather, enter and maintain tax information in the payroll systems; identify and research any inconsistencies in data for explanation or correction.
  • Prepare wires and checks for tax remittances to federal, state and local governmental agencies on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis.
  • Review and update income tax withholding spreadsheets associated with reporting requirements of federal, state and local agencies.
  • Work with Tax Supervisor to complete calendar year-end processing of Forms W-2 and 1042-S.
  • Assist students, faculty researchers and visitors with preparation of applicable non-resident alien tax forms such as Forms 8233 (compensation) and W-8BEN (scholarship/fellowship) as well as research and address questions.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school education with three or more years of payroll experience processing federal, multi-state and non-resident alien reports, forms and remittances.
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, as well as work under pressure with tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks with varied deadlines; must be pro-active, collaborative and adaptable as technology and procedures are refined and changed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and units across campus, maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Proven ability to think independently, work collaboratively as part of a team and contribute to a positive work environment.
  • Working knowledge of PC's and desktop software, preferably Microsoft Office Suite and Google Gmail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Payroll experience in a college or university environment.
  • Experience working with complex financial and HR information systems (Oracle PeopleSoft helpful).
