About the position

As a Payroll Specialist at Lerch Bates, you will play a crucial role in the accurate and timely administration of all payroll-related functions for multiple companies. Your work will directly impact the financial operations of the company, ensuring the accuracy of timesheets, calculating pay adjustments, and processing multi-state payrolls while understanding and applying payroll policies, government regulations, and tax requirements. You will own the entire payroll process to ensure checks are processed in accordance with corporate policies and procedures. This position requires a strong understanding of state and local payroll taxes, and you will be responsible for setting up new accounts as needed. You will also act as the first point of contact for employee questions relating to payroll, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws as applicable. In addition to payroll processing, you will maintain employee information and payroll data within the timekeeping and payroll systems, process new employees, promotions, and terminations, and respond to internal and external requests for payroll information. You will assist the accounting department with month-end close when it pertains to payroll accounts, file workers compensation reports and tax reports for various states and districts, and complete year-end processing for payroll reporting and 401K contributions. Your role will also involve administering the company PTO policy, collaborating with the HR team to ensure all payroll deductions are accurate and timely, and processing all certified payroll requests. This position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the entire payroll process to ensure checks are processed in accordance with corporate policies and procedures.
  • Manage the timekeeping and payroll systems to ensure the information is accurate and in alignment.
  • Collect and verify timesheets.
  • Maintain employee information and payroll data within the timekeeping and payroll systems.
  • Process new employees, promotions, and terminations.
  • Act as the first point of contact for employee questions relating to payroll.
  • Have a strong understanding of state and local payroll taxes and set up new accounts as needed.
  • Work with the payroll provider tax team to ensure the timely and accurate filing of all tax-related items.
  • Respond to internal and external requests for payroll information as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws as applicable.
  • Assist the accounting department with month-end close when it pertains to payroll accounts.
  • File workers compensation reports and tax reports for various states and districts.
  • Complete year-end processing for payroll reporting and 401K contributions.
  • Responsible for payroll and 401K plan audits.
  • Administer company PTO policy to include accruals and monthly reconciliations.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to ensure all payroll deductions are accurate and timely.
  • Process all certified payroll requests.
  • Complete verifications of employment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in payroll processing.
  • An Associate's Degree is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of relevant Federal/State/Local requirements regarding payroll records and best practices.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment juggling multiple projects and priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to work well with all levels of employees, build partnerships, and direct teams.
  • Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Word and Excel.
