About the position

The Payroll Specialist at The Berg Group LLC is responsible for processing all aspects of payroll, assisting in onboarding, employee setups, and managing union transfers. This role requires close collaboration with various departments to enhance performance and ensure smooth operations. The Payroll Specialist will work under the guidance of the Payroll Manager and the Superintendent Team to review weekly time records for completeness and accuracy, ensuring that payroll is processed efficiently and accurately for a workforce of 300-700 employees. In this position, the Payroll Specialist will address escalated payroll-related questions, correct paycheck errors, and make necessary adjustments in collaboration with the Payroll Manager. They will run reports during the weekly payroll process to identify potential errors and resolve employee inquiries regarding their pay. Additionally, the specialist will lead the processing of weekly payroll, manage wage levies, child support, and other compliance efforts, and ensure adherence to state laws regarding final pays. The role also involves exporting, preparing, and loading HSA and 401k files weekly, processing month-end union reporting, and maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of the payroll system, Paycom, along with basic knowledge of Plexxis accounting software. The Payroll Specialist will prepare reports for relevant departments regarding payroll, company budgets, and expenses, and assist in workers' compensation, unemployment, and union audits as needed. They will also complete certified payroll reporting weekly and monthly, and support HR Generalists in onboarding new union employees. This position requires a detail-oriented individual who can adapt to changing processes and software, and who is comfortable taking on tasks with minimal direction.

Responsibilities

  • Review weekly time records for completeness and accuracy with the Payroll Manager and Superintendent Team.
  • Answer escalated payroll-related questions and correct paycheck errors and adjustments.
  • Run reports during the weekly payroll process to identify potential errors.
  • Address and resolve employee questions about their pay.
  • Lead the processing of weekly payroll for 300-700 employees, fixing errors as they arise.
  • Partner with Superintendents to process Final Pays in accordance with State Laws.
  • Export, prepare, and load HSA and 401k files weekly.
  • Assist in processing month-end union reporting for all active unions.
  • Manage wage levies, child support, and other wage-related compliance efforts in a timely manner.
  • Update active rate sheet in Paycom converter.
  • Understand union rate sheets and calculate/completing manual checks.
  • Maintain high-level knowledge of the payroll system, Paycom, and basic knowledge of Plexxis accounting software.
  • Prepare reports for relevant departments about payroll, company budget, and expenses.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports for Director of Finance, Payroll Manager, and other management levels as necessary.
  • Assist in workers' compensation, unemployment, and union audits as needed.
  • Complete certified payroll reporting weekly and monthly, as well as workers' compensation reporting.
  • Assist field hires and HR Generalist when onboarding union new hire employees.
  • Work closely with HR/Payroll Generalist and Payroll Manager to complete aligned tasks as they arise.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field preferred.
  • 5 years of experience in payroll processing or related field, preferably in commercial construction.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, and experienced with payroll-related software and time reporting applications.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative phone and email skills to reach shared goals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree or formal post-high school education and/or certificate in accounting or related field.
  • 2-5 years of related experience in commercial construction or an equivalent mix of education and payroll experience.
  • Paycom experience is a plus but not required.
