About the position

The Payroll Specialist at Bluffton-Harrison Metropolitan School District is responsible for supporting the business functions of the school corporation by facilitating payroll operations. This role involves processing payrolls, preparing contracts and agreements, and ensuring compliance with tax regulations and retirement contributions.

Responsibilities

  • Process all payrolls including entering exceptions, balancing, check printing, and distribution.
  • Prepare all certified contracts, classified agreements, and extracurricular agreements, including computing, balancing, and distribution.
  • Prepare and pay all FICA, State, and Local tax withholdings within the allowed time frame.
  • Prepare, process, and balance all monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports, including W2s for employees.
  • Maintain and report all state retirement contributions on a per pay basis.
  • Prepare and maintain all employee business records, including W4s and tracking leave of absences.
  • Compute severance benefit figures for retired employees.
  • Reconcile and process all time cards for hourly employees.
  • Enter all new employees into payroll records.
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise in payroll processing regulations and perform other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.

Requirements

  • Business courses from a college, university, or school of business; or two to four years related experience; or training involving bookkeeping and accounting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to secure a bond in the amount of $50,000 before assuming duties.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate payroll-related information to various stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in keyboarding, document formatting, word processing, and other technology skills appropriate to the functions of this job.

Benefits

  • Starting wage of $22.35 per hour with additional wages commensurate with experience.
  • Full-time position with 260 working days per year.
