The Payroll Specialist position at Centerspace is a full-time role that requires the individual to manage the company's bi-weekly payroll processing. This includes collecting, verifying, and storing payroll data, as well as processing changes in the Human Resource Information System (HRIS). The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for updating employment statuses, exemptions, withholdings, compensation changes, and bank information. Additionally, the role involves reconciling payroll-related general ledger accounts and preparing reports or statements that summarize payroll-related accounts. The specialist may also interface with third-party payroll vendors and must ensure compliance with all legal requirements and government reporting regulations regarding payroll processing. In this role, the individual will follow established policies and procedures to complete routine assignments, demonstrating the ability to prioritize duties and comply with deadlines. While substantial guidance will be provided initially, the Payroll Specialist is expected to be self-directed once trained. A high level of confidentiality is required, along with the ability to communicate effectively with various audiences. Attention to detail and professional communication skills are essential, as the role involves handling moderately complex issues and referring more complex problems to higher-level staff. The individual should possess a solid working knowledge of payroll processes and regulations. The essential duties and responsibilities include bi-weekly payroll administration, handling timesheets, processing payroll, running payroll reports, verifying and reconciling payroll-related tax filings, managing wage garnishments, processing off-cycle payroll, and ensuring compliance with laws such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). The Payroll Specialist will also support payroll audit inquiries, recommend process improvements, and respond to payroll-related inquiries from team members and management, providing a high level of customer service and confidentiality. Other general responsibilities include processing terminations, filing Workers Compensation claims, assisting with annual benefits open enrollment, and maintaining electronic personnel files.
