About the position

The Payroll Specialist position at Robert Half is a contract-to-hire opportunity based in Cleburne, Texas. This role is focused on managing payroll functions and assisting with accounts payable tasks in a dynamic and detail-oriented environment. The specialist will ensure accurate and timely payroll processing while also handling various accounting responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Process payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Manage payroll tasks such as vacation, holiday, and sick leave reporting.
  • Prepare and upload direct deposit files for payroll processing.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, deductions, and taxes.
  • Verify payroll tasks and provide financial data for bank transfers.
  • Prepare payroll-related reports, including W-2s, W-4s, and 941 tax returns.
  • Process and verify accuracy of 1099s and 1096s.
  • Prepare quarterly reports for federal taxes and state workforce commissions.
  • Handle payroll garnishments (e.g., IRS, child support, student loans).
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state payroll regulations.
  • Collaborate with HR on payroll and benefits-related issues.
  • Manage weekly Accounts Payable (AP) processes, including invoice validation and payments by check or ACH.
  • Handle vendor setup and verification, resolving disputes to ensure uninterrupted services.
  • Reconcile accounts payable, resolve discrepancies, and manage monthly AP closing.
  • Maintain accurate records and generate financial reports for management.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and assist in revising AP procedures.
  • Provide general accounting support, including preparing journal entries.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general accounting principles and detailed payroll processing.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel; experience with Tyler ERP and UKG software preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy in data entry, and multitasking abilities.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certified Payroll Specialist credentials or equivalent certification preferred (or commitment to obtain within 1 year).
  • Experience in municipal/governmental payroll and accounts payable is a plus.
  • Associate's degree in Accounting, Business, or related field with 2+ years of payroll and accounting experience; OR High school diploma with 5+ years of payroll, accounting, or bookkeeping experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Payroll Specialist credentials or equivalent certification preferred (or commitment to obtain within 1 year).
  • Experience in municipal/governmental payroll and accounts payable is a plus.
