About the position

The Payroll Specialist at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is responsible for calculating employee pay, reviewing payroll documentation for accuracy, and ensuring timely payment to employees. This role involves consulting with supervisors on pay adjustments, maintaining customer service standards, and collaborating with team members in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Calculate employees' pay using pre-built calculators and general math equations.
  • Review Personnel Action Forms for accuracy and analyze to determine pay adjustments.
  • Calculate and write up appropriate adjustments to ensure accurate and timely pay to employees.
  • Consult with supervisor on unusual pay adjustments.
  • Review manual/amended timesheets for completeness and appropriateness in accordance with FLSA law.
  • Review payroll edits indicating inaccurate data.
  • Correct errors following office policy and procedures.
  • Advise supervisor and/or Human Resources on issues preventing payment to employees.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a professional manner, exemplifying quality customer service practices.
  • Maintain a good rapport with regular customers, e.g., timekeepers, fiscal and personnel administrators.
  • Review data entry edits of peer specialists for accuracy.

Requirements

  • Basic payroll experience or graduation from an accredited college/university with an associate or undergraduate degree with emphasis on bookkeeping or accounting, or a combination of college and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with employees of various levels within the University.
  • Ability to use office automation software, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Nice-to-haves

  • Extensive working experience in a payroll operation is preferred.
  • Advanced analytical and mathematical computation skills preferred.
