About the position

The Payroll Accountant is responsible for compiling and preparing the district payroll, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll records in accordance with established procedures and regulations. This role involves working under moderate supervision to maintain payroll accuracy and compliance with various reporting requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate district payroll for distribution to employees following established procedures.
  • Receive and audit time sheets for all district employees, calculating wages, salaries, hours worked, overtime pay, and determining withholdings, deductions, and net pay.
  • Balance payroll earnings and deductions; initiate related transfers of funds and deposits.
  • Maintain district payroll registers, employee payroll information, and other original documentation in an orderly and accurate manner according to state, federal, and district requirements.
  • Prepare and post all payroll changes including payroll deductions, salary changes, termination, and new employee information.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required, including maintaining payroll and related files such as payroll records, absent-from-duty reports, and service records.
  • Prepare and submit payroll reports and forms required by various agencies including the IRS, Texas Workforce Commission, and others.
  • Work cooperatively with human resources, principals, department heads, and employees to ensure accuracy of reported information and resolve payroll issues.
  • Respond to requests from financial institutions regarding verification of employment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information and follow district safety protocols.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; two years of college coursework in accounting preferred.
  • 2 years of payroll accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of basic payroll accounting procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and auditable records.
  • Proficiency in using software to create spreadsheets, databases, and perform word processing tasks.
  • Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with numbers accurately and rapidly to meet established deadlines.
