About the position

The Payroll Specialist at Higley Unified School District is responsible for managing payroll processes, ensuring accuracy in fiscal transactions related to employee payroll, and maintaining compliance with accounting principles. This role supports the Payroll Supervisor and involves preparing payroll, processing deductions, and responding to employee inquiries regarding payroll matters. The position requires strong organizational skills and the ability to handle confidential information while providing excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Support HUSD Vision, Mission and Goals.
  • Assist the Payroll Supervisor with various accounting duties related to employee payroll and departmental budgets.
  • Prepare District payroll by assessing hours worked from time sheets and leave requests.
  • Calculate and process 403-B and other authorized deductions.
  • Verify and balance payroll information prior to processing.
  • Distribute paychecks according to scheduled pay periods.
  • Monitor import of leave used and time worked from the time clock system.
  • Verify appropriate accounting codes and pay rates for employee timesheets.
  • Maintain current computer-based payroll by updating wage rates and deductions.
  • Process direct deposit additions, changes, and deletions.
  • Maintain records of annuity deductions and process reports and remittances.
  • Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll matters and resolve related problems.
  • Communicate with banks, government agencies, and auditors regarding payroll information.
  • Maintain employee payroll files with confidentiality.
  • Process Personnel Action Request forms with payroll-related information.
  • Compute contract amounts and verify entries for employee pay computation.
  • Authorize payments to ASRS and prepare payroll verification reports.
  • Maintain accurate files and records for documentation purposes.
  • Provide time clock system training to staff.
  • Participate in training and professional growth opportunities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two or more years of computerized payroll processing experience.
  • General accounting/bookkeeping experience.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Some college-level business/accounting courses preferred.
  • Keyboarding accuracy at 55-60 wpm.
  • Proficient operation of ten-key calculator.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience with timekeeping and payroll software.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
