About the position

The Senior Payroll Practitioner at Spectrum Brands is a vital role responsible for the timely and accurate processing of payroll for both weekly and biweekly cycles, as well as incentive payrolls. This position requires a strong focus on compliance with state and local payroll regulations, ensuring that all payroll data adheres to corporate policies. The practitioner will be tasked with balancing and reviewing all payroll-related taxes, including Federal, State, and FICA, and will also oversee the balancing of W-2 forms. A significant part of the role involves auditing changes from the Workday HRIS system, which includes new hires, pay changes, and terminations, to ensure payroll accuracy and integrity. In addition to processing payroll, the Senior Payroll Practitioner will collaborate with internal and external auditors to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls and internal processes. The role also includes managing supplemental payroll inputs such as wage garnishments and loans, and ensuring that payroll results and general ledger reports are accurately transmitted to the Finance department. The practitioner will support various reporting, tax filing, and vendor requests related to payroll runs, and will be responsible for generating off-cycle payments as needed. A key aspect of this position is providing exceptional customer service by addressing employee inquiries and troubleshooting payroll-related issues promptly. Responsibilities

  • Process biweekly and weekly payroll in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensure payroll data compliance with applicable state and local payroll regulations and corporate policies.
  • Balance and review all taxes related to assigned payroll, including Federal, State, and FICA, and balance W-2's.
  • Audit changes from Workday HRIS each pay period to ensure payroll accuracy.
  • Work with internal and external auditors for SOX compliance and internal controls testing.
  • Oversee supplemental payroll inputs such as wage garnishments, loans, or levies.
  • Transmit payroll results and general ledger reports to Finance.
  • Support reporting, tax filing, and vendor requests pertaining to each payroll run.
  • Run reports as requested by the business.
  • Perform payroll audit reconciliations.
  • Stay current on payroll practices and regulations for Canada in collaboration with external providers.
  • Generate off-cycle payments as required.
  • Answer employee questions and troubleshoot payroll issues in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of related experience in a professional role.
  • At least 3 years of experience processing payroll for salaried and hourly employees.
  • Prior payroll processing experience with more than one country preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard payroll concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience with cloud-based payroll systems, preferably Dayforce Ceridian.
  • Experience in a trade union environment is a plus.
  • Experience with time shift models.
  • Fluent in English; multilingual is a plus.
  • Demonstrated confidentiality and integrity in handling payroll data.
  • Knowledgeable of Sarbanes-Oxley controls.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and Word.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and high-level customer service skills.
